The Grimmimutz trail offers fun and activities for the whole family

Discover everything about the Waldmandli Grimmimutz (a mythical forest dweller called Grimmimutz)

Dear visitors, a very warm welcome to the Diemtigtal (Diemtig valley)! Along this circular trail on the Grimmialp you will follow me through my adventures. You will also meet my friend Spillgert, the Pepper Witch and her evil husband Lothar. Activity stations along the way will make your outing even more fun. During summer, I love to pick berries, mushrooms and herbs. I often sit at the riverside and observe the fish. Sometimes I even catch a trout. Maybe we’ll meet one day?
Bye bye and see you soon, Grimmimutz

Our recommendation: Respect nature when visiting our valley, our local farmers appreciate it

The Grimmimutz trail leads you through cultivated pastures. Please close the gates behind you and take your rubbish with you. The grazing cows thank you because waste can be very dangerous if they swallow it.

Highlight of every family excursion

If you are a family, you can’t miss the Grimmimutz adventure trail. This trail is based on the children’s story written and illustrated by Peter Zahnd, a local teacher, which narrates the adventures of Grimmimutz and the evil Pepper Witch. Along the hike you will read Grimmimutz’ story, play at various stations, discover nature and learn how to treat it with respect. Along the trail you’ll find also inviting barbecue sites where you can enjoy, for example, a typical Swiss sausage such as the Cervelat. Doesn’t this sound like a perfect family excursion?

Grimmimutz is a one of a kind, a good-nature soul, who lives at Grimmialp. He loves nothing more than peace and nature. However, life is not always easy, and his evil neighbour disturbs the peaceful atmosphere. But Grimmimutz is not alone. The giant Spillgert is his loyal friend, and together they help the locals to fight against the evil intentions and pranks of the Pepper Witch and her husband Lothar.

Important to know: the activities take place in German.

Natural experience for children

The various activity stations are created just for you, children. Whilst hiking attentively, you’ll have fun learning how to respect nature. More than once you’ll be mesmerised by the beauty of the rear Diemtigtal (Diemtig valley), and your feet will almost walk on their own.

Be aware: Did you catch a glimpse of Grimmimutz’ grey hair glimmering behind a gnarled rootstock? You won’t be able to miss the huge Spillgerte, the enchanted giant of the story, at the back of the valley.

The trail

This circular trail is 3.3 km long and open from mid-May until the end of October. The lower, flat part of the hike is also accessible during winter, but the activity stations are only partially open and not fully maintained during this period.

You start the trail at its departure point in Schwenden, more precisely at the Senggiwald car park (fees apply). If you are travelling by public transport, then take the PostBus at the train station Oey-Diemtigen and enjoy the ride until the terminus «Hotel Spillgerten». After a five-minute walk you will reach the departure point of the trail.

The Grimmimutz Infopoint, which is located at the beginning/end of the circular trail, offers refreshments and delicious ice cream on sunny days during weekends and daily during school holidays. Moreover, here you will find detailed information about the Grimmimutz adventure trail, you can buy the books of his adventures (only available in German) and read them at home as a reminder of your excursion in the Diemtigtal (Diemtig valley). At the Infopoint there are also local specialties available such as dried sausage and alp cheese.

How difficult is the Grimmimutz adventure trail and how long does it take?

Follow the wooden signposts «Grimmimutz», and it will take around 1 hour 30 minutes to complete the trail. Depending on how much you want to play, you can extend the excursion up to a whole day. The trail is suitable for children aged three to four years old. Pushchairs can be taken as far as the Mutzenstube log cabin since the trail continues with an ascent to the Türli hut (150m difference in height). If your young hikers get tired, you can easily shorten the hike and return to the departure point following the stream.

Cervelat, lighter, and other useful things

Along the hike you’ll find several barbecue sites. Cook a typical Swiss sausage such as a Cervelat on a wooden stick to complete your excursion on the Grimmimutz adventure trail. Don’t forget to remind your parents to take sausages and lighters with them. Wood is provided at the barbecue sites. Enjoy your break!

Entry for our Grimmimutz Heinzelmännchen (elves)

Our Grimmimutz Heinzelmännchen work throughout the year in order to keep the trail safe and attractive. They look after the activity stations replenishing materials, replacing parts of the trail and carrying out other maintenance. For this reason, we kindly ask you to pay the entry fees. The «Grimmimutz-Kässeli», the pot where you can pay, is located at the entrance to the trail.

Take Grimmimutz home

Grimmimutz articles are popular gifts. The first two books tell the story in German of Grimmimutz and his friend, the giant Spillgert. These are the same adventures you’ll discover and experience along the Grimmimutz adventure trail. The book «Grimmimutz Gutenachtgeschichten» (Grimmimutz bedtime stories) includes short Grimmimutz adventure stories in the mysterious mountain world and is published in German. The fourth book, which is also written in German, is «Grimmimutz und der Zauber der Gedanken» (Grimmimutz and the charm of thoughts) which intends to show the concept of the Nature Park Diemtigtal from another perspective. In addition to the four books, a CD is also available, with the stories of the first two books and the Grimmimutz song told in German. The Grimmimutz cap and the Grimmimutz bubble soap game complete the collection.
