Earlier writings tell us that the healing properties of the springs at the rear of the Diemtigtal were also acknowledged by the seasonal workers of the Diemtigtal and their neighbours in the Simmental. High up on Grimmialp, approximately 2,000 metres above sea level, the crystal-clear spring rises from the stony ground at the foot of a colossal rock face.
The effect of the water
These wells have brought hundreds of people, including those from far beyond the valleys, lasting healing for old ailments and fresh, new life. Often when all other help had failed. Summer after summer and, in desperate cases, even in winter, their waters were collected from the towering alp in barrels, wooden wine casks called “brente” and bottles, often in the face of great adversary. It had become customary to place bright-red, iron-rich stones in the drinking water, supposedly to help preserve the healing power of the water, but also as proof that the water had been collected from the right springs.
The ascent begins at the Senggiweid car park, 400 metres after the “Grimmialp, Hotel Spillgerten” PostBus stop, and crosses the Würzi. The challenging mountain trail up the Grimmi alp winds through the shady mountain woodland. En route it’s worth stopping by the wild mountain waterfall before continuing up to the Grimmi alp, where you will be met by an impressive high plateau. On the mountain trail to Uelis Grimmi, you will pass through Grimmialp’s high alpine place of strength (1,840 metres above sea level) with its dramatic red springs. The way back takes you via Alp Nidegg back to the starting point. If you don't want to make the descent, you can hike via Alp Stierenberg to the mountain station of the Grimmialp cable car (note operating times, cable car only runs at weekends and in good weather). The circular hike can also be done in the opposite direction. The path is marked with white signs and a green route label featuring the route number and name.
If you wish, you can avoid the ascent and descent by shortening your hike time with the Grimmialp mountain railway (please make a note of operating times).
Autobahn A6 Bern towards Zweisimmen, 1 km after the Simmenfluh tunnel turn left towards Diemtigtal. Follow Diemtigtalstrasse into the valley for 19 km towards Schwenden, Grimmialp.
Paid parking is available at the base station for the Grimmialp mountain railway or Senggiweid (start of the Grimmimutz adventure trail).
Take the train to Oey-Diemtigen. Afterwards take the PostBus to the “Grimmialp, Hotel Spillgerten” bus stop (terminus).
A flyer with an overview map is available from the Diemtigtal Nature Park office (in German only).
