How to behave in nature – rules
Along the hiking trails we often pass through private ground and cultivated pastures. It is therefore very important to respect each other, and to follow the rules:
-
Stay on the hiking trails
-
Close the gates after going through them
-
Keep your dog on its lead
-
Please only start fires at official barbecue sites
-
Please take your rubbish back home/to your accommodation for disposal
-
It is important that you take weather forecasts seriously: the weather in the mountains changes very quickly
A variety of hikes
To the Alps, through forests, up the mountain and straight ahead
There are several hiking options in the Diemtigtal (Diemtig valley) and they offer you the ideal surroundings to switch off and recharge while being active. Enjoy a rest at one of the traditional mountain restaurants along the hike. Try their delicious local specialities from the alp. Hiking in the Diemtigtal is a profound experience with a long-lasting effect on your body and soul.
The PostBus takes you to the departure points of the hikes in the valley. Higher located departure places are accessible by car. If you stay overnight in our valley, you’ll receive the much-loved NaturparkCard (guest card of the Diemtigtal Nature Park). This card entitles you to free travel on the PostBus as well as on the two chairlifts Wiriehorn and Grimmialp.
«Bluttfuess über Stock u Stii» (barefoot over rough and smooth)
It was daily life for our ancestors, but is a whole new experience today. Take off your shoes! Not just in the «Badi» (Swiss German for lido) and your own garden. Summer season is hiking season. It’s worth taking a break from time to time and taking off your shoes. Feel the roots on the forest ground. Not only is it a pleasant feeling, but it’s also healthy to feel the natural ground under your bare feet.
Hiking for everyone
You might have sore muscles after a long descent, but apart from this, there are almost no side effects from hiking - provided that you wear appropriate shoes. In addition, your packing list for a hike is not long at all: a backpack, maps, hiking poles, protection from sun and rain, food and, very importantly, enough to drink, because refreshments are not available everywhere along the hike.

Diemtigtaler Talwanderweg (Diemtigtal's valley hiking trail)
This popular hike starts at the railway station Oey-Diemtigen from where the PostBus takes you deeper into the Diemtigtal (Diemtig valley). Following the Diemtigtaler Talwanderweg you will cross the two valley streams Chirel and Fildrich over eleven bridges. You’re away from the road but, along the 16 km hike you will still find eleven PostBus stops. This means there’s one every 20-40 minutes.

Do you know the Rosa Canina? Have you ever stood close to an original «Schwinger-Siegermuni» (a special bull that is won by Swiss Wrestling champions)? Can I only hike in fine weather?
Rain has beneficial effects on nature during summertime. Consequently, rain shouldn’t cause any harm to us humans. Imagine that the weather has just changed, and the first raindrops are falling. Smell the summer. Engage all your senses on a walk in the summer rain and feel the soft raindrops refreshing nature after a hot day. All you need is rain protection and rubber boots to keep you dry for your deep dive into nature. When walking through the rain, choose easier walks such as the Diemtigtaler Talwanderweg (Diemtigtal’s valley hiking trail). Along the trail you can observe curious salamander venturing out of their hiding places into the rain.
Our recommendation:
swim in the ice-cold mountain lake
You don’t like crowded and noisy swimming pools? You don’t quite trust the water in the lido? In that case, we have exactly what you’re looking for. Something that refreshes your body and relaxes your soul.
The two alpine lakes Meienfallseeli and Seebergsee are idyllically set between rocks and mountain pastures, far away from any crowds. What are you waiting for? Put on your hiking boots and pack your swimming trunks for an unforgettable swimming experience in a mountain lake.
Encountering mother cows and livestock guardian dogs
Traditional alpine farming is hugely important to the Diemtigtal Nature Park. Therefore, hiking trails often lead through pastures. You might encounter mother cows with their calves. Since mother cows protect their calves, we recommend keeping your distance from the cattle and not touching the calves. Moreover, if you are hiking with your dog, put it on the lead and let it go only in an emergency.
Due to the return of wild predators, livestock needs to be protected more than ever. In the Diemtigtal (Diemtig valley) there are livestock guardian dogs working on several pastures. Usually, these dogs are harmless for us humans, even if their size may instil fear. You can find out which areas are currently employing livestock guardian dogs on > herdenschutzschweiz.ch (website only partially available in English). The website also has tips on how to behave when encountering these animals.
